In the Chair (6) : Vanessa Mae

Vanessa Mae
Simply Beautiful !!!

Vanessa-Mae Vanakorn Nicholson was born in Singapore on October 27th, 1978 - exactly 196 years after legendary violinist Niccolo Paganini...! Her family moved to London when she was 4. That's where she started to learn playing piano and, year later, violin. At the age of 7 she won a prestigious competition for 'Young British Pianist of the Year' (the only one she took part in). That's when she gave up pianist career and decided to concentrate exclusively on playing violin. After being personally invited by professor Lin-Yao-Ji, Vanessa, 8 years old at the time, travelled to conservatory in Beijing to continue training being taught by the Maestro according to methods developed by russian teachers. The course was originally scheduled for 3 years, Vanessa, however, had finished it in few months time, assimilating all hints and suggestions received from her teachers in such a short period of time. After that she returned to Europe to receive further training. In 1988 she travelled to Schlezwig-Holstein for summer master-courses, where she trained under professor Felix Andreyevsky. When Vanessa was 11, she passed entrance exams for a one-year course at Royal College of Music, where, year later, she became the only child in College's history to gain the 'The Professional Diploma Course' diplomma.

Vanessa-Mae started her concert appearances at the age of 10. She played with Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, being the youngest solist in history to play Bach's, Mozart's and Kabalevsky's concertos with the orchestra.

In 1991 the whole world celebrated 200th anniversary of Mozart's death; right then 12 years old Vanessa performed, along with London Mozart Players, her first internaitonal tournee with concerts on Far-East. She played with the best orchestras, including performances in London with London Symphony Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra, or (as was already mentioned) London Mozart Players.

At the age of 9 she started writing her own cadenzas to Mozart's concertos, at 12 she had 3 albums in her discography: two of them containing classical repertoire, the third ranging between Bach, Tchaykovsky, Gershwin, The Beatles, or the theme from 'The red panther'. She is also the youngest violin player ever to record Beethoven's and Tchaykovsky's violin concertos at once. She often declares that she's going to play whatever she likes, no matter if this would be Beethoven, The Beatles, Mozart, Michael Jackson, Prince, Paganini or Elvis Presley -- she likes them all.

Vanessa quickly became an extremely popular and well-known person. She is often invited to take part in TV and radio programs, where she played along with stars like Jose Carreras or Soul II Soul. She receives extremely positive reviews... "phenomenon of the '90s"... "plays as if she was born with the violin"... "wunderkind"... She is compared with such musicians as Yehudi Menuhin, Heifetz or Kreisler.

1995 was a very important year to Vanessa-Mae. That's when "The Violin Player" was released. The album features a fusion of classics, pop, rock and techno -- as the Artist describes it herself. Featured compositions range from Back to rock. In 1995 Vanessa played on Sopot Festival in Poland. The performance turned out to be a huge success. Vanessa-Mae got a completely new publicity and 'The Violin Player' selled in almost 300,000 copies at that time. Many stated that world turned insane. Vanessa made people interested in violin music and the instrument -- forgotten by many and associated with philharmonies got a new image.

All important magazines write about Vanessa-Mae. Both those dedicated to classical music (like "Gramophone") and those writing about all the other genres (like "Billboard"). Her career is spotted by "The Times", "The Guardian", and most other newspapers worldwide. In 1997 "Storm" was released and gained quite some applause from both critics and audience. Vanessa's star doesn't fade away -- she releases even better and more surpricing albums.

It was on the eve of her 21st birthday that Vanessa-Mae, for 10 years the world's favourite child prodigy of pop-classical music, finally decided it was time to grow up and sack her mother. She did not choose to do so lightly. Pamela Mae Nicholson, 42, had been producer and piano accompanist for her only child since she first stepped onto the stage as a 10-year-old.

"The trouble was that mum and I were very different in what we wanted and how we wanted to achieve it. She just didn't understand or support what I was trying to do. We talked and argued, but there comes a point when you can't force an adult - particularly your own mother - to see things your way. When I realised it wasn't possible to work together on something we'd both be proud of, it seemed better to go solo.

"I'm not someone who makes spur of the moment decisions and it didn't happen quickly. I had thought about it quietly to myself. It had been building for a long time."

"There's been a lot of clearing up to do because it was a working relationship and we had to round things up and finish off," she says. "We are still in contact, but we don't see much of each other because I am off working and she is busy with other projects. She has always been very ambitious and is working harder than ever."

"Working in the studio the atmosphere is so different. It's so happy," she says. "Everyone is excited to be contributing which is a different feeling from before. I always used to be a perfectionist and a bit of a whip-cracker, now I've learnt that you can't work alone. You need to take other people's advice and criticism because they have things to offer you that can be very helpful. That's something my mother couldn't do and I couldn't do for a long time.

"If you gave me a choice of ending up differently to how I am now I would still choose to be here today over every other possible version of me. I believe that life is too short for regrets or for wondering `what if'?"

In the Chair (5) : Patrizio Buanne

Patrizio Buanne

Style, sophistication, elegance… Where can we find that old-school cool in our consumer culture of instantly disposable celebrity? Time to meet Patrizio Buanne. Tall, dark and handsome, perfectly groomed and impeccably dressed, the clean-cut Italian with the rich baritone voice is an enigma.

Patrizio is an artist I have loved for many years, mostly for his romantic style, but also on a profoundly personal level;  the image above could easily be mistaken for one I have in my possession of a guy who was, and always will be, the love of my life!  The lyrics to most of Patrizio's repertoire I can relate to totally in this respect, as they constantly remind me of the most intimate and memorable aspects of my entire life to date and wonderful times gone by . . .  aahhh!!

Forever Begins Tonight

and

Angels (Un Angelo)

Patrizio Buanne spent his childhood between his hometown in Naples, Italy and Vienna, Austria, due to his parent’s restaurant business.

This multi-cultural upbringing sparked in Patrizio an early passion for languages, and by the age of 17 he already spoke fluent Italian, German, English, French and Spanish. It seemed obvious for both Patrizio and his parents for him to become an interpreter, and after graduation from school he went on to study Slavic languages at University and today he can add fluent Polish to his language tool kit. But whilst his aptitude for languages is admirable, a much greater gift, apparent even from the age of 4, was emerging - his gift to be able to sing and entertain people.

Inspired by the singers of yesteryear, Patrizio harks back to a time when a man would not dream of singing onstage in anything less than a suit, shoes polished, clean-shaven, hair neatly brushed, with a dab of cologne behind the ears.

Nothing strange about that, you might say. Except that Patrizio is only 32 years old - and hopelessly devoted to his art - romantic crooning. Dean Martin, Paul Anka, Tom Jones , along with the traditional Italian singers - these are the men he idolises. Unfashionable?  Perhaps, on first impression. But as they say: style is temporary and class is permanent.

Patrizio's life is a remarkable story in itself. He's won countless talent shows, played Elvis onstage and sung for the Pope. And all before he was 20.

When he was 8 his parents bought him a guitar and at 11 years old Patrizio made his first public performance at a talent contest for schools. He borrowed his father's white dinner jacket and sang Only You. "Until then I had wanted to be a cook like my father. But standing on that stage in front of all those people made me realise what I really wanted to be was a professional singer."

Also at 13, Patrizio played a starring role in his primary school's graduation ball, already in his own white dinner jacket and bow tie his mother bought him for the occasion. "It was fantastic. It was fun and the people liked it. I got my first pay cheque - and my first experience with girls! All those 17 and 18 year old girls came back stage and I didn't know what to do. I had my first dance with a girl that night."

He began to enter talent competitions - and always won first prize. He even won a contest for Elvis impersonators, his prize being a trip to Graceland with his mum. "All the other entrants were older guys doing Seventies Elvis in jump suits, but I was fascinated by the 50's and 60's so dressed like a rockabilly and sang Heartbreak Hotel."

That led to an offer to play the lead in an Austrian stage production about Elvis when he was 16. "I was still at school and all my friends were at discos, while I was doing my homework and then going to the theatre. It was fun, girls came backstage"

At the age of 17 Patrizio was invited to sing for the Pope in Poland, performing in front of his biggest audience yet - 85,000 people - when the Pontiff said mass on a papal visit to his home country. That led to a recording contract and at 17 Patrizio began to gain a reputation in Poland.

"I used to go to school in Vienna from Monday to Friday and every Friday I'd go to Poland where I had a successful single in the charts. I'd do two concerts over the weekend then on Sunday nights I'd get the midnight train back to Vienna, doing my homework on the journey, and my mum would meet me at 6.30am on Monday and take me straight to school."

Tragedy followed when his beloved father died shortly after Patrizio's 17th birthday and, grief-stricken, Patrizio almost lost his own life to a perforated ulcer. But one thing made him determined to survive.  "I had promised my father I would be a superstar and make my name - his name - famous. It is always music that reminds me of my father and makes me happy."

In 1999 Patrizio took up an uncle's offer to return to Italy and, after winning yet another talent show, found himself offered a job as a TV entertainer. Soon he was one of the most popular young faces on Italian television, hosting his own show in between studying languages at university in Rome. "It was a big contract with fantastic money, a fantastic flat in the centre of Rome. But my dream was still to be a recording artist - and most of all to be successful in Great Britain and America."

In 2003 Patrizio was introduced to music producer Christian Seitz. They both shared the same passion and vision for music, so bravely quitting his burgeoning TV career they went to work on the album - going into London's world-famous Abbey Road studios with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra to realise his dream. 18 months later the result is 'L'Italiano' ('The Italian'), an album mixing traditional Neapolitan romance and singing tradition with Italian standards from the Fifties and Sixties - songs barely known outside Italy but destined to become favourites for a new generation..

"Everyone is familiar with the Latino lover, singers like Julio Igelsias or Ricky Martin, the concept for this album is the Italian lover," says producer Christian Seiz.  "I want to give people Italian romance, growing up outside Italy, I feel even more Italian than a native, because I was raised with this cliché of pasta eating, hand gesturing, Alfa Romeo driving… My father was the ambassador of Italian kitchen and pizza and I am the ambassador of Italian romance and dolce vita," says Patrizio.

To listen to Patrizio is to immerse yourself in the soundtrack of a world familiar from film and television - from Federico Fellini, Sophia Loren and Gina Lollabrigida to The Godfather, Goodfellas and The Sopranos. "My music is as Italian as pasta in an Italian kitchen," says Patrizio. These songs are timeless classics. To me, crooning is more than a way of singing, it's a way of life!  And I want to share that with a new audience."

Patrizio’s real ambition, however, was to become an international recording artist and from 1999 onwards he invested his own money into shaping ideas and concepts with which to approach record companies and international concert promoters. Various trips and tours were undertaken, as well as independently distributed CD’s and DVD’s – all of which without having a manager.

In 2004 Patrizio approached a producer who had the right resources to realize his concept and idea of recording with an orchestra comprising a collection of romantic and fun songs from the Italian songbook. The very songs that Patrizio was brought up listening to and dedicated to his late father. That way Patrizio also wanted to explain on the other hand that Italian music is not just opera or classical, but that there are countless tunes that are originally Italian, and became international standards over the years. With a finished produced album under his belt he auditioned for several record companies and was finally signed by a major record company in the UK for a world wide release. His international debut album entitled, “The Italian”, was finished at the Abbey Road Studios (made famous by The Beatles) in London, accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. After its first release in February 2005, it reached the top ten on the pop charts in the United Kingdom, where it attained golden status after only 1 week.

But what quality separates Patrizio from other great artists? Is it the natural grace of his voice, the “rugged” good looks, or the confident, casual, respectful attention that he gives to his audience? Or is it just the basic trust he evokes in people?

Italy has provided a simple word to describe all of the above; “Simpatico”.

Just released, April 2010, is his 'Patrizio' CD and his first for Warner Music. Teaming up with legendary producer Humberto Gatica (Elton John, Madonna, Mariah Carey) Buanne takes on classic easy listening standards such as 'Fly Me To The Moon' and 'Mambo Italiano' all delivered in his unique and contemporary way.

In the Chair (4) : Joe McElderry

Joe McElderry

XFactor Winner 2009 ~ The Story So Far .  .  .

Joe McElderry was born in South Shields, Tyneside, England on 16th June 1991.

After attending Harlton Technology College, he joined South Tyneside College and then Newcastle College where he studied performing arts. Joe was backed by them to win the X Factor.

Many people don’t actually realise that Joe McElderry had auditioned previously for the X Factor in 2007, however felt very young in comparison to the other contestants, so much so that he decided to walk away from the competition at that time.

In his audition in Manchester Joe McElderry sang “Dance with My Father”, by the late Luther Vandross. He then travelled to Morocco with his mentor Cheryl Cole, where she and Will Young chose him as one of the final three to continue on to the live shows.

Joe chose the same song in the X Factor final as he did for his initial audition, Luther Vandross’s “Dance With My Father” .

The second song was “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me”, which he sang alongside George Michael.

Joe chose “Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word” as his third song, and sang it note perfect.

Joe McElderry won the public vote along with Olly Murs, to reach the final two of the X Factor Finals.

Stacey Solomon gave one of her best performances, but still didn’t make the cut for the final.

Joe and Olly both performed “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus in the final show of the X Factor.

Joe McElderry eventually won the series with almost faultless vocals throughout the final shows and clinched the coveted £1 million recording contract.

Joe McElderry’s first CD ” The Climb” was released after becoming the sixth winner of the X Factor 2009.

The 18 year old performing arts student from South Shields new single “The Climb” certainly is apt, as he definately climbed his way to the to the winning position on the show.

In the Chair (3) : Rhydian Roberts

Rhydian Roberts

Coming only second in the final of XFactor 2007, Series 4, Rhydian has since shot to fame in the classical/crossover genre with his second album 'O Fortuna' and is now invited regularly to perform as a prestigious guest for the Royal Family ~ and also privileged to have become a Patron of the Prince of Wales' Trust.

Always the extrovert, Rhydian gave stunning electrifying performances during the series including  Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's specially commissioned version for Rhydian of  'Phantom of the Opera', Meatloaf's 'I Will Do Anything for Love', Queen's 'Somebody to Love' through to his ballads of  'Somewhere' and 'The Impossible Dream'.

Getting the Party Started

Phantom of the Opera

Since bursting onto our TV screens 26 year old Rhydian has seldom been out of the news. He was male debut artist of the year in 2008, his first album achieved double platinum status. He has performed all over the world and also had a sell out Tour in April/May 2009 with 24 dates throughout the UK and Ireland.   His rich baritone voice and mesmerising stage presence has brought pleasure to millions.

Born in Wales on Valentine's Day, Rhydian began singing at the age of three. In his teenage years he was a talented rugby player before an injury curtailed his sporting career and led him back to his first love - music. He won a bursary to the prestigious Birmingham Conservatoire, graduating with a first class Honours degree in 2007.

Today Rhydian is still a keen sportman and admits to being addicted to his twice daily fitness regime. He combines his successful career as a performing artist with sell out concerts, prestigious guest appearances and his role as Patron of the Prince of Wales Trust.

On Tour - Plymouth Pavilions 2009

This was the first time I actually heard and saw Rhydian in the flesh. I have been following him from the beginning of X Factor and on through Southampton, Bolton, the "racecourse" concerts etc, but always at a distance. The first thing that struck me was how unique and different he is with such an incredible stage persona, yet vulnerable at the same time.

Highlights for me were The Living Tree - I didn't rate it too much before, but live it was sensational. Somewhere and The Impossible Dream - magnificent. The new song wasn't really my cup of tea, but what blew me away was having Rhydian just sitting playing a piano and singing - the audience was transfixed. He doesn't always need the frills - he is incredible on his own. His voice live is amazing and sometimes other things can become a distraction.

If I have any negatives at all - it would just be as the result of a huge positive.  Rhydian has grown and matured as a stage performer and entertainer and actually evolved into so much more of a higher calibre performer, that this show was a bit limiting for him. The Rhydian that conceived this show, put it together and executed it, is a different Rhydian than the one who stepped onto the stage in Plymouth on tour. In some ways he has out-grown the traditional format of the show - the weak local support act (although reasonable, was out of her natural environment), it was nearly an hour before he came on stage - people were getting restless - they had come to see Rhydian!  Thankfully his first appearance (red sparkley suit) was such a blast that this soon disappeared.  I don't think even he knows how much he has transformed and how much he is appreciated and admired. His next tour can be completely his and as unique as he is.

I think he will also develop the deeper more challenging elements of his live performance.  His 'Music of the Night'  didn't completely do him justice on YouTube videos but was a revelation and completely mind-blowing live. I was left with a longing for more of the "serious/deeper" songs - maybe a few more classical elements to show off all the many facets of such a unique and special voice.

Rhydian the Christian and Humanitarian

On 4th January 2010 Rhydian left for Kenya to help 're-build' this school :-

"Our dream is to fund raise enough money and return to the Hill - Wheeler School this year and complete works to the classrooms and kitchen areas. We have had reputable construction engineers visit the school and it looks like this project will cost around £3000.

We will be travelling to Mombasa (personally funded) to oversee all works along with anyone who wants to help.

If you would like to contribute, we are not a registered charity… this fund is for people who know and trust us that they will see results".

It has been a fantastic experience to follow Rhydian and witness the amazing steps that he has taken to become the artist and performer he is today. It has been a priviledge to see him grow the wings that I saw on his Solo Tour and I am genuinely excited and wait in anticpation to see what the future holds for such a special and unique talent and, on a lighter note and purely for the record, who would have thought that underneath that flambouyant exterior lay a hidden physique like this:

Didn't expect that did you?  Well Rhyd was a Personal Trainer just before he went on XFactor!!
